Maria Terry Brown ----------------------------------------- 9:00pm ----------------------------------------- Ryan (president) couldn't make it, so Don was designated as his surrogate. Don got the meeting started. Described plan to create a series of short videos for posting to the internet. Proposed videos be very freeform. Several of members attended expressed interest in proposed YouTube video idea. Freeson arrived a few minutes late to the meeting. He passed out a handout ("Film Club - Viral Videos") documenting several ideas for a series of videos, themed about Some discussion of Freeson's idea for the series of videos. Criticism that perhaps the idea of the "College Hack" was not specific enough or there wasn't enough thematic coherency. Stefan proposed making the videos very freeform and allowing a lot of different kinds of content. He said we shouldn't "start fresh" with the video channel, but rather should add some content that Film Club already has. He proposed actually finishing the improv videos made earlier this semester and posting those on YouTube. Freeson responded by saying he thought the project should involve everyone in a more or less cohesive member. Felix asked if the viral videos conform to the overall goals of film club. Didn't want to devolve into a club that just makes "crappy YouTube videos." Don highlighted the promotional aspect of the videos, especially for the audience of other students on campus to know about the club and STUFF in the spring. New member () arrived at 9:35pm. He expressed interest in the club, having emailed Ryan earlier. He was greeted by Don, at which point we learned he was a first-year MBA student. Felix later expressed support for Freeson's hack idea, saying it was open and general enough to allow for the creation of many different videos. People: videos should be humourous, eye-catching to be most effective. Hack idea was explained further to James. Apparently, the videos are supposed to have been stolen from people's computers on the college network. Explained that idea of viral videos is not only for promotion, but also to get new members of the club more involved in the creative aspects of film club. The hope is that with new members helping out with the videos, the membership of the club will be less likely to precipitously decline over the course of the semester. Club will still produce longer form projects (Ryan's project, for instance). Videos will be designed to be produced in a very short amount of time. Freeson noted that the quality of these videos is not necessarily of the utmost importance, as long as they are effective. Videos planned to be filmed on a schedule of about one per 2 weeks. Some disagreement about first video to be produced: activist girl, lecture-to-porn ... ? Felix left to go to an RA meeting. He was bid farewell. Stefan brought up the importance of having good, funny actors in the videos. Don agreed, noted that comic timing, acting is essential. Don told members to find funny people! Subtleties of acting discussed. Freeson talked about having online bboard system up very soon (by Tomorrow?). Don asked how video ideas should be solicited. Also proposed that people volunteer to take on certain roles. Everyone was welcomed to throw out ideas for what they'd like to work on. Try to make lightsaber and succeed. Fight over color of lightsaber, etc. - Short effects films Falsified footage of film club projecting huge image somewhere on campus. Make scene recognizable, so people wonder if it's real, discuss. - Stupid class projects. Freeson: - Activist Amy - Dancing iPods Terry: - Flashmob of ninjas Discussion of funny videos online. Improv Everywhere, etc. Freeson said he has finished the new logo for the Film Fest, but he did not have it with him at the meeting. Plan is still to shoot something on Thursday. Don adjourned the meeting.
